The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes near milepost 7.2 in Bloomsbury around 4:25 p.m. on Monday, July 25, NJSP Trooper Charles Marchan told DailyVoice.com.
A 2007 Freightliner pulling a utility trailer was heading east in the center lane in front of a Toyota Camry, which was in front of a Mazda CX-5, Marchan said.
Meanwhile, a Kia Sorrento was in the left lane alongside the 2007 Freightliner, which also had a 2015 Freightliner box truck to its right.
A 2019 Kentworth pulling a utility trailer crashed into the back of the Mazda, which veered off the left side of the road and hit the guardrail, Marchan said.
A wheel from the Mazda then became detached and struck the Kia as the Kentworth continued traveling and struck the rear of the Toyota, which struck the rear of the 2007 Freightliner.
The Kentworth then veered into the right lane and hit the Freightliner box truck, causing the box truck to hit the front of the 2007 Freightliner before veering off of the road and hitting the guardrail, Marchan said.
Two Mazda passengers ages one and four suffered moderate injuries, while the driver, 35-year-old Abbie G. Stross, all of Mount Laurel, was seriously hurt.
The Kentworth driver, Michael L. Ansley, 50, of Athens, GA, was moderately hurt, while the 2007 Freightliner driver, Paul J. Mayville, 59, of Miden City, MI, suffered minor injuries, Marchan said.
The impact also caused minor injuries to 31-year-old New York City resident Joseph F. Levy, who was driving the Toyota, as well as 43-year-old Elizabeth resident Felix L. Mora-Sanchez, who was driving the 2015 Freightliner.
Drew E. Hawkins, 25, of Washington, D.C. was uninjured in the crash, Marchan said.
All lanes were shut down for several hours following the crash, according to 511NJ.
The crash remains under investigation. Additional details were not released.
